The application of BIM in landscape architecture has a long history, but in China, classic cases remain rare, and usage is mostly at the CAD level. Today, I will briefly introduce the BIM software applications for landscape architecture and the categories they include.
1. Landscape Energy Consumption Analysis Software
1. Autodesk® Ecotect® Analysis:
Developed by Autodesk, with the latest version released in 2011, Ecotect Analysis is a green design analysis software suitable for stages ranging from preliminary conceptual design to detailed planning. It offers various simulation and building energy analysis functions, such as energy consumption assessment, solar radiation evaluation, field of view analysis, daylighting, shadow, and reflection assessments. These features enhance the accuracy of building designs and allow data export to other software for broader applications, such as exporting to winAIR for wind farm evaluation.
2. Flow Design Plug-in for Revit:
This lightweight computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, developed by Autodesk, integrates with Autodesk Revit to simulate wind speed, wind direction, and air pressure around sites and buildings. It helps designers understand the environmental characteristics of the site’s wind field and improve design quality in the early design stages.
3. Graphisoft EcoDesigner:
EcoDesigner is green energy analysis software built into ArchiCAD. It enables designers to incorporate energy assessment processes during conceptual design, analyze energy and carbon consumption, and display results through numerical charts, pie charts, histograms, and other visual formats.
4. WindperfectDX:
Developed by Japan Environmental Simulation Corporation, WindperfectDX is a CFD simulation tool for human living environments. It supports direct import of models via data links with 3D CAD systems like AutoCAD and Revit, and reads GIS attribute data to reduce modeling time significantly.
WindperfectDX integrates planning and design with environmental simulation, including dynamic wind field and direction simulation, wind speed contour maps, surface wind pressure visualization, indoor and outdoor flow field simulations, natural ventilation and air conditioning simulations, valley wind environment analysis, external thermal environment assessment, and output of simulation animations. Other related software includes Lighting Analysis for Revit and Solar Analysis for Revit.
2. BIM Software for Landscape Professional Design
Currently, there are very few specialized BIM software tools tailored specifically for landscape designers, both domestically and internationally (Ahmad Mohammad AHMAD et al., 2012). In China, most landscape professionals are not yet familiar with BIM, so except for Civil 3D, the following BIM landscape professional software lack distributors or user groups. Here are some notable examples:
1. Landcadd for Revit
Developed by Eagle Point, Landcadd for Revit is a BIM software designed specifically for landscape practitioners and integrated with Autodesk Revit. It includes a landscape component database featuring elements such as planting, obstruction columns, and lighting fixtures. The software supports planting design, parking lot layout, fence design, and accelerates design proposal development while facilitating interdisciplinary team integration.
2. Siteworks for Revit
Also developed by Eagle Point and integrated with Autodesk Revit, Siteworks is an enhancement tool for landscape and civil engineering professionals. It supports design tasks such as land preparation, sidewalks, parking lots, and retaining walls. The software enables landscape designers, architects, and civil engineers to collaborate from early design phases, clearly communicate concepts, and produce detailed design drawings.
3. RIK Landscape Pack for ArchiCAD
RIK Landscape Pack, developed by RIK company and attached to ArchiCAD, provides a database of realistic landscape components. It can be used to draw curbstones, create and adjust terrain and slopes, design masonry walls, handrails, hedgerows, flower beds, planting layouts, and road designs. The software includes specialized tools that reduce design time and present realistic visualizations, with corrections reflected promptly in plan, elevation, section, and perspective views.
4. ArchiTerra for ArchiCAD
ArchiTerra, developed by Cigraph and integrated with ArchiCAD, is terrain creation software for environmental design, urban planning, and managing 3D terrain models. It allows direct drawing of terrain or terrain creation through DXF files or point elevation text files. Beyond terrain modeling, ArchiTerra offers various auxiliary features and is fully compatible with ArchiCAD.
5. Vectorworks Landmark
Vectorworks Designer, developed by Nemetschek Vectorworks, includes professional modules such as Architect, Landmark, and Stage and Lighting Design. The Landmark module offers landscape designers extensive design functions and components, including land preparation, planting design, staircase wall creation, a rich material and component library, intelligent design tools, automatic generation of quantity reports, and realistic color rendering capabilities.
6. Civil 3D
Autodesk Civil 3D supports BIM workflows for civil engineering design. It provides tools for terrain modeling and land preparation, earthwork calculations, corridor modeling, sanitation facility configuration, flood analysis, drainage system construction, quantity estimation, and road/highway design. Its features include terrain modeling, hydrology, slope analysis, and orientation assessment, making it highly suitable for landscape professional applications.
