How Prefabricated BIM Technology Enhances Refined Management in Construction Firms

Recently, the Beijing Building Information Modeling (BIM) Technology Application Alliance Establishment Conference and the First BIM Technology Exchange Conference were held at the Information Building of Guanglianda Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Guanglianda). The event was led by the Beijing Urban Construction Technology Promotion Association and jointly initiated by prominent universities, research institutes, and companies from various sectors including development, design, construction, supervision, engineering consulting, and software within Beijing’s architecture field. Over 100 representatives attended, including leaders from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and members of the alliance.

BIM Technology Drives Modernization in the Construction Industry

During the conference, Wan Chun, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology and Rural Construction Department at the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, emphasized that BIM technology plays a crucial role in advancing informatization within the construction sector. It provides essential technical support for integrating the industrial chain and promoting industrialized construction. BIM has become a key tool for upgrading traditional industries and enhancing project management, significantly accelerating the modernization of the construction industry.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development issued the “Notice on Issuing the Outline of Information Technology Development in the Construction Industry from 2016 to 2020” (Jianzhihan [2016] No. 183). The outline mandates a comprehensive improvement in the informatization level of the construction industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. It calls for enhanced integration and application of technologies such as BIM, big data, artificial intelligence, mobile communication, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. The construction industry is expected to make significant progress in digitalization, networking, and intelligence, establishing an integrated supervision and service platform. Additionally, the plan aims to improve data resource utilization and information services, fostering construction enterprises with strong IT innovation capabilities and internationally advanced information applications, as well as IT companies with key independent intellectual property rights.

Wan Chun also highlighted current challenges in Beijing’s BIM application among architectural design and construction firms, including insufficient adoption and difficulties with software integration. To address these issues, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, together with the Beijing Urban Construction Technology Promotion Association, has actively established the Beijing BIM Technology Application Alliance to promote BIM technology implementation and use.

The BIM Alliance Supports Enterprise Transformation and Upgrading

It was reported that Beijing has made notable advances in BIM technology, prefabricated buildings, and green buildings. BIM has been applied in numerous construction projects across the city, with the number of applications growing annually, especially in recent years. Many large and complex buildings have successfully utilized BIM, resulting in significant investments and demonstrable benefits.

Wang Shaoshan, Vice President of Guanglianda and General Manager of the Guanglianda BIM Center, emphasized the importance of the Beijing BIM Technology Application Alliance. He noted that the alliance strengthens the construction industry by reflecting its development needs to the government through research, guiding the future application and development of BIM technology. Furthermore, the alliance supports government agencies in formulating BIM-related policies and standards and improving management systems. As a software service provider, Guanglianda BIM looks forward to collaborating, exchanging ideas, and assisting more partners engaged in BIM technology applications.

Miao Leru, Chairman of the Beijing BIM Technology Application Alliance, stated that the alliance unites influential universities, research institutes, developers, designers, constructors, supervisors, engineering consultants, software companies, and other stakeholders in Beijing’s construction industry. Covering all aspects of the industry chain, it aims to forge a collective force that accelerates enterprise transformation and upgrading while boosting efficiency and competitiveness.

Gradual Advancement of BIM Technology Adoption

According to the conference, the Beijing BIM Technology Application Alliance plans to promote BIM technology adoption in three stages from 2016 to 2020: guiding application, improving application, and popularizing application. By 2020, the goal is to achieve widespread use of BIM technology across a significant scale of engineering construction, marking a milestone year for construction industrialization.

To accelerate BIM adoption in Beijing’s construction sector, the alliance will establish BIM technology standards, specifications, and application environments tailored to the city’s actual conditions. It will also provide technical services to enterprises, enabling them to master BIM technology more efficiently and cost-effectively, thus transforming it into enhanced productivity.

The alliance’s work plan includes developing evaluation criteria for BIM technology demonstration projects. Based on these standards, 10 to 20 demonstration projects will be selected annually, with experience-sharing sessions organized to highlight successful applications. Construction units will be encouraged to build BIM data management platforms to facilitate information exchange and data sharing throughout project phases, including investment planning, survey and design, construction, and operation and maintenance, following BIM standards.

Additionally, the Beijing BIM Technology Application Alliance will promote and popularize BIM use in areas such as scheme optimization, detailed design, technical disclosure, quality and safety management, and schedule management. The alliance will conduct multi-level education and training programs annually to enhance the operational skills and management capabilities of BIM professionals.
