How to Create a New Property Filter for CAD Layers
When modeling, importing CAD base drawings is a common and efficient way to quickly create models. However, CAD drawings often contain graphics from various categories and disciplines, which can make the process overwhelming. So, how can you display only the relevant professional drawings after importing CAD files? Here’s a simple method to help you achieve that.
1. Open your CAD drawing and click on the Layer Properties button on the toolbar, or use the shortcut key la, as shown in the image.
2. In the Layer Properties dialog box that appears, click the New Property Filter button located in the upper-left corner, as illustrated.
3. In the new Layer Filter Properties dialog box, enter a name for your filter in the Filter Name field—for example, HVAC. You can choose any name that is easy to remember; there are no strict requirements, as shown in the image.
4. Next, define the filter by filling in the criteria under Filter Definition. In the blank space below Name, enter keywords commonly found in the layer names or related expressions you want to filter, such as HVAC. Then click OK, as demonstrated.
5. After clicking OK, you’ll return to the Layer Properties dialog. Selecting the newly created HVAC layer filter will display all layers related to HVAC in your drawing, as shown.
Why is this useful? Learning this method makes it easy to search for specific elements like pipelines or perform classification-based modeling during your workflow.
