Creating Duct Elbows in Revit Using Metric Duct Elbow Templates
During a project, the default families provided by Revit may not always meet your specific requirements. In such cases, creating custom families becomes necessary. This guide explains how to create a new duct elbow using metric duct elbow templates.
Step 1: Open Revit software and click New. A New Family – Select Template File dialog box will appear. Choose the Metric duct elbow template and open it, as shown below.
Step 2: Go to the Create panel, select the Layout command, then click Draw Path. Choose Center endpoint arc and start drawing the path on the drawing interface, as illustrated.
Step 3: Draw a circle using the intersection of the center radius and length as the endpoint, marking it at 45 degrees. Next, draw a semicircular path within this angular range, as shown.
Step 4: Select Edit Outline. When the Go to View dialog appears, open the Facade: Front view. Click Circular and start editing a circle with a radius of 150 mm. Confirm the edit by clicking the check mark twice to exit editing mode, as demonstrated.
Step 5: Open the 3D view, then in the Create panel, select Duct Connectors. Set the dimension annotation on the circular duct model to a diameter of 300 mm, as shown.
Step 6: Since the metric duct bend template file already includes predefined family types, categories, and parameters, you don’t need to set these parameters again. You can now load this circular duct elbow into your project for testing, as illustrated.
Step 7: Taking advantage of the metric duct bend template, you can create circular duct elbows with angles ranging from 15° to 175°. By following the steps above, elbows up to 180° can be produced. Examples of circular duct elbows at various angles are shown below:
15° Circular Duct Elbow
60° Circular Duct Elbow
90° Circular Duct Elbow
135° Circular Duct Elbow
Step 8: Repeating the above steps, you can also create rectangular duct elbows within this angle range. Examples include:
45° Rectangular Duct Elbow
90° Rectangular Duct Elbow
Summary: This article demonstrates how to use Revit’s built-in metric duct elbow templates to create duct elbows tailored to your project needs, especially when the required types are not available in the default family library.
