How to Measure the Bottom Height of Ducts and Pipes in Revit Section Views
When adjusting pipe harnesses in Revit, working within section views is common. However, the default section settings do not allow you to measure the top and bottom heights of various pipes directly, which can slow down the pipe adjustment process. Fortunately, with a few simple settings, you can easily measure the heights of different pipes, significantly improving your workflow efficiency.
Follow these steps:
- Open the section view and access the Visibility/Graphics Overrides dialog (shortcut:
VVorVG), as illustrated below. - In the dialog, locate the categories for Pipes, Ducts, and Cable Trays. Expand their options and uncheck the lifting settings for each category, as shown in the figure.
- Move your cursor to the bottom or top edge of the pipe you want to measure. Press the
TABkey to cycle through selectable points until the vertex or bottom point of the pipe is highlighted instead of the center point. Click to select it, then move the cursor to the floor edge and click again. This will measure the pipe’s top or bottom height relative to the floor. For other pipes, you can measure directly by selecting the upper or lower edges, as demonstrated.
Why this matters: When adjusting pipe assemblies in section views, precise height measurement is essential for placing supports and hangers correctly within the model. These elements usually require bottom-level alignment, and the method above enables accurate bottom height measurement to facilitate this.
