How to Fix Revit’s Issue with Generating Types After Loading Components

How to Fix the Issue of Revit Not Generating Types After Loading Components

While learning to create a metric bathroom family based on walls, I encountered a problem: after completing the family, I couldn’t place it in the project. An error message appeared, stating, “Unable to generate type.”

After some investigation, I found no helpful information and decided to consult experienced members of the project team. It turned out that the issue wasn’t with the Revit software itself, but with an error I made in the Revit family creation process.

Here is a preview of the incorrect bathroom family placed in the project. Notice that the bathroom family extends into the wall. Why did this happen? The problem was that I didn’t select the reference plane on the wall for alignment. Instead, I selected the wall directly, which caused the “unable to generate type” error message. Once I realigned the family correctly using the reference plane, the issue was resolved.
