How to Cut and Load Families in Revit Projects
A user recently asked how to cut external families within a Revit project. Specifically, they inquired whether built-in families can be used for hollow extrusion cuts.
Unfortunately, hollow extrusion cuts cannot be performed using Revit’s built-in families. To achieve this, the recommended approach is to create a face-based metric generic model family template designed for hollow objects, and then load it into your project. Below, we will demonstrate this process using a column cap created by a community member as an example.
First, start with a face-based metric generic model template. Create a new hollow extrusion family within this template. You can freely select the shape of the rectangle and then extrude the hollow rectangle to the bottom of the face in the 3D view.
After making the adjustments, make sure to check the option labeled Hollow Cut When Loaded in the properties palette.
Next, create a new project and load both the column cap and the newly created hollow extrusion family into it. Place the hollow extrusion family onto the column cap.
Finally, use the cut command to cut both families together.
