Using Letters or Symbols to Label Pipe Types in Revit
In Revit software, pipelines that utilize dashed or dotted lines as their line types can be customized by defining the desired line pattern. Users can then edit the graphic overrides in the pipeline system type properties to apply these custom line patterns as fill patterns. However, since Revit does not support the inclusion of letters or symbols directly within line pattern settings, it is not possible to use letters to represent pipeline purposes directly through line patterns.
Here is a step-by-step method to label pipe types with letters or symbols:
1. Open the Metric Standard Markings.rft family template. In the family category and parameters dialog box, select Pipeline Marking as the family category. Also, check the box for Rotate with the component to ensure the label remains perpendicular to the pipeline, as illustrated below.
2. Remove any existing text, then go to the Create tab and select the Tags command. Click a point on the surface to place your label.
3. In the Edit Label dialog box, choose Category Parameters, then add System abbreviation to the tag parameters. Click OK to complete the label creation, as shown in the figure.
4. Save the family file and then click Load into Project to bring the family into your Revit project.
5. Select the pipeline system that requires labeling and edit its type properties. Enter the desired abbreviation letters in the Abbreviation parameter under the identification data. For example, the household cold water system uses the letter J as its line type identifier, as shown below.
6. Use the Tag command to place the label on the pipeline. Make sure to uncheck the Leader option to place the tag directly on the pipe, as demonstrated in the image.
