Creating Outdoor Steps Using Floor Slab Edges in Revit

How to Use Floor Slab Edges to Create Outdoor Steps in Revit

When designing irregular outdoor steps, it’s best to use the edge of the floor slab as a guide. For standard staircases, you can directly use the Staircase tool in Revit.

Start by drawing the floor slab where the outdoor steps will be located.

Next, select the Floor Edge command.

Choose the boundary contour of the floor slab, then click Edit Type and duplicate the existing outdoor steps type.

In the Type Properties dialog box, locate the Sketch parameter and insert a custom profile family.

To create this custom profile, open a new family using the Metric Profile template and edit the profile by drawing the desired contour using straight lines. Once complete, load the family back into your project.

Insert the custom profile family outline into your floor edge.

You can adjust the vertical and horizontal offsets of the contour in different directions to fine-tune the step placement.
