What is Building Information Modeling (BIM) and How Does Importing It Benefit Your Project?

Introduction to BIM Concept

The author has previously discussed BIM with many friends, but it seems that newcomers to the BIM field often misunderstand the relationship between BIM and building information modeling. Today, we will clarify:

What is BIM (Building Information Modeling)? What are the benefits of incorporating it into a project?

What is BIM (Building Information Modeling):

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a collaborative, visual, and value-enhancing approach used to create comprehensive building models. It plays a crucial role throughout the entire lifecycle of a building.

In the 1970s, Professor C.M. Eastman from the Georgia Institute of Technology introduced the concept of the Building Product Model and developed the Building Information Simulation Handbook (also known as the BIM Handbook). He described BIM as “a digital simulation of buildings for design and construction, where the model’s properties and attributes become recorded information within the project plan.”

It was not until after 2000, with rapid advancements in information technology, that BIM gained widespread adoption in architecture. According to Eastman, “BIM employs three-dimensional numerical modeling combined with object-oriented parameters to create workflows that generate, communicate, and analyze the designed building model.”

In essence, BIM is not a software tool but a concept involving human activities and collaboration across multiple parties in the construction process.

Additionally, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) defines BIM as “a computer modeling technology that connects project planning information databases.” Simply put, BIM uses 3D building models integrated with databases to link all aspects of a project.

This means BIM is characterized by digitization and parameterization, enabling building information to include diverse data such as architectural components, spatial relationships, geographic information, component quantities, and procurement details.

By adopting BIM, project information can be communicated more comprehensively. The numerical and parametric data allow stakeholders to quickly grasp the design concepts, visualize the actual project space in 3D, and even interact with the models for an optimal presentation.

This study aligns with BIM principles by integrating ontology and 3D modeling tools to support building construction and maintenance processes.

Benefits of Incorporating BIM into Projects:

  1. Streamlined and Simplified Workflow: BIM accelerates project delivery and improves efficiency through 3D model construction.
  2. Enhanced Collaboration: It facilitates better communication and seamless integration among project teams, enabling multi-person, multi-task collaborative design.
  3. Improved Engineering Management: BIM provides cross-disciplinary information, increasing design accuracy and enabling better record-keeping and progress tracking to satisfy both owners and contractors.
  4. Higher Design Consistency and Quality: It reduces errors and offers optimized choices for structural schemes, construction methods, and building lifecycle management.
  5. Increased Competitiveness and Opportunities: Rapid model creation supports project documentation and allows for model reuse in future projects.
  6. Boosted Productivity: An integrated workflow shortens project timelines, while fewer design errors reduce costs.
  7. Simplified Construction Management and Operation Maintenance: BIM enables comprehensive communication spanning all engineering data and visuals, making it easier to select optimal design and construction solutions. The model also supports maintenance tracking and equipment management.

In conclusion, what is BIM (Building Information Modeling)? What are the benefits of incorporating it into a project? We hope this article has provided you with a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of BIM.
