How to Apply Coatings on the Exterior of Columns in Revit
In Revit, you can add a “Coating” model to a column family during its creation. Start by using the “Metric Structural Columns” family template to create a structural column family. Then, go to the menu and select Manage > Object Styles. This will open the “Object Styles” dialog box. Here, create a new subcategory under structural columns and name it “Coating.” Set the properties for the “Coating” subcategory as illustrated below.
Next, use the solid extrusion tool to model the column. After that, apply the solid extrusion tool again to create the coating outside the column. The extrusion sketch for the coating should look like the example shown.
In the “Properties” dialog box for the extrusion, set its subcategory to “Coating,” as demonstrated in the image.
Select the coating extrusion, then click the “Visibility” button on the option bar. This will open the “Family Element Visibility Settings” dialog box. Under the “Detail Level” section in the center, check only the “Fine” option. This setting ensures that the coating extrusion is visible only when the view’s detail level is set to “Fine.” Click OK to apply these visibility settings.
When you place this structural column in your project, the cross-section will display the coating only when the view’s detail level is set to fine, as shown below.
During project use, you might notice that the heights of the column body and the coating are not aligned. This happens because the structural column and coating do not have locked reference planes. To fix this, return to the family editor and align and lock the top and bottom reference planes of both the structural column and the coating, as illustrated.
