As December approaches, the second half of the biannual BIM level exam season is underway. Many candidates have entered an intense preparation phase, hoping to pass on their first attempt. Recently, I have received numerous questions such as “Can I pass the BIM level exam without attending training? Is the exam easy?” In this article, I will share my perspective on these common concerns.
1. Can I Pass the BIM Level Exam Without Attending Training?
The answer is yes — you can apply for and pass the BIM level exam without formal training. However, this assumes you have strong confidence in your skills or have already achieved practical results in BIM applications. Many people have asked me about agencies that claim training is mandatory for registration or that it significantly increases your chances of passing.
Regarding the claim that training is required to register, this is simply a marketing tactic used by training institutions. While understandable in today’s market economy, the reality is that the daily pass rates I have tracked from various sources show that candidates who attend training consistently have a higher success rate than those who don’t. This can be attributed to several factors:
1. Learning environment: Training provides a structured setting where teachers supervise and motivate students, creating a certain level of accountability. (I consider myself a relatively lazy person, and it was only through the encouragement and supervision of my instructors that I successfully passed the first and second level architecture exams.)
2. Systematic learning: Training starts from the basics and gradually progresses to more advanced topics. This helps beginners build a solid understanding of BIM concepts and often includes unified Q&A sessions or simulated exams before the actual test, which greatly improves the chances of passing.
3. Personal motivation: We are all prone to procrastination. Having a supervisor or teacher to guide you helps maintain focus and discipline, especially during study. Ultimately, personal effort is essential after this structured support.
In summary, these are the advantages of attending training for the BIM level exam from my experience.
2. Is the BIM Level Exam Easy?
This question was addressed in my previous article “Is the BIM First Level Modeler Certificate Useful? Is the Exam Easy?” so I won’t repeat all the details here. The key point is that the exam questions tend to follow a similar pattern each year, differing mainly in question types. As long as you review the material on time and practice consistently, passing the exam is very achievable — provided you dedicate sufficient study time.
That wraps up my thoughts on the questions “Can I pass the BIM level exam without training? Is the exam easy?” I hope this article helps you as you prepare!
