BIM Software Tips: How to Install AutoCAD on Windows XP
Answer:
If you want to run Autodesk® software on Windows® XP or Vista, especially for a fresh installation, there are specific steps you should follow to avoid common issues.
Typically, installing software in Safe Mode helps resolve installation problems. However, this approach does not work on Windows XP or Vista because the installer cannot run in Safe Mode.
The recommended solution is to use MSCONFIG to achieve a state similar to Safe Mode but with essential installation services enabled. Then, restart your system and proceed with the installation. Follow these steps carefully:
Note: MSCONFIG is not included by default in Windows 2000. To use this method on Windows 2000, you will need to copy the msconfig.exe file from a Windows XP machine first.
- Click Start Menu > Run (on Windows XP) or Start Menu > Start Search (on Windows Vista).
- Type
msconfigand click OK. - In the System Configuration window, select Diagnostic Startup to disable most Windows services.
- Go to the Services tab and ensure the Windows Installer service is checked (enabled).
- Click OK and restart your computer when prompted.
Important: This process does not require copying the installation CD contents to your hard drive because the basic CD driver will still load in this diagnostic mode. However, you won’t have access to network resources during this time.
To return to normal startup mode after installation:
- Click Start Menu > Run (Windows XP) or Start Menu > Start Search (Windows Vista).
- Type
msconfigand click OK. - In the System Configuration window, select Normal Startup.
- Click OK and restart the computer when prompted.
