How to Load a Family into Revit When the Family File Fails to Open

When loading a family into Revit, you might encounter a message stating: “Cannot load some or all of the selected family files. You must select a family file for the <family Category> category. Do you want to retry loading the new file set?”

Reason:

This error usually occurs when a family is selected from a category that does not match the category expected by the load family command. For example, if you are on the Architecture tab and use the Door command, but then try to load a window family, this mismatch will trigger the error.

Solution:

To properly load any family, navigate to Insert > Load from Library > Load Family and select the appropriate family file.
