BIM Software Tips: Revit Techniques
In Revit, the default shortcut keys are typically the first two letters of the command’s English name. For example, the Align command uses AL by default. However, this shortcut can be inconvenient since it requires reaching far across the keyboard, and sometimes using the mouse to click the command is actually faster.
Interestingly, some Revit commands come with two default shortcut keys. For instance, the Copy command can be activated using either CO or CC. Similarly, the Align command can be triggered by AL or A followed by the spacebar.
Another example is the Place Building Component command, which can be accessed with CM or C plus the spacebar. There are many others like this, so it’s worth experimenting to find what works best for you.
The advantage of these alternative shortcuts is that they are designed to be used comfortably with your left hand, without stretching or moving too much across the keyboard. This makes them faster and more convenient to use. Avoid shortcuts like AL, which require reaching across half the keyboard. Instead, customize your shortcuts by pressing KS to reset them according to your personal preferences.
Here are some useful default shortcuts to get you started:
- Trim and Extend:
TT - 3D View:
DD - Set Work Plane:
GZ - Stand Up Straight:
ST - Curtain Wall Grid:
WG
