BIM Software Tip: Resolving the “Graphic file is invalid” error when opening a drawing in AutoCAD
Issue:
When attempting to open a drawing file in AutoCAD, you may encounter the following error message:
“The graphic file is invalid.”
Possible Solutions:
This error typically indicates that the drawing file is corrupted. However, there are several steps you can take to try to open or recover the file:
- Open the drawing file directly rather than through the “Recently Used Documents” menu.
- Verify that the storage location of the drawing file is accessible and functioning properly.
- Use the
RECORDandRECORDALLcommands within AutoCAD on other graphic files to check for issues. - Note that damaged files cannot be inserted into clean drawings or templates using the Insert command.
- Try opening the file using a different version of AutoCAD—either older or newer—to see if compatibility affects the file’s accessibility.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider the following recovery options:
- Search for backup files with the
.bakextension or the most recent autosave files with the.sv$extension. These backups might be located in the same folder as the original.dwgfile or in your user’s temporary folder. - To access the temporary folder, type
%tmp%into the address bar of any folder window or the Start menu search field. - Rename the backup or autosave files by changing their extensions from
.bakor.sv$to.dwg. This may allow you to open a usable version of the drawing, though it might not contain the latest changes. - If possible, try retrieving the file from another computer or a file backup system to assist with recovery.
Following these steps can help you manage and recover your AutoCAD drawing files when facing this error.
