BIM Software Tip: Summary of New MEP Features in Revit 2015 (Part 1)
IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is a standard developed by the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI). It serves as a global benchmark established by the International Collaborative Alliance to improve communication, productivity, time management, cost efficiency, and quality throughout the entire lifecycle of construction projects.
Today, an increasing number of construction-related products support the IFC standard for data exchange, enabling seamless integration across multiple design and management disciplines.
The IFC data model standard is widely applied in various fields of Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Facility Management (AEC/FM). It encompasses both tangible building elements—such as beams, columns, slabs, ceilings, and furniture—and abstract concepts like planning, space, organizational structures, and costs.
The latest IFC standards cover nine key construction areas:
① Construction;
② Structural Analysis;
③ Structural Components;
④ Electrical;
⑤ Construction Management;
⑥ Property Management;
⑦ HVAC;
⑧ Building Control;
⑨ Pipeline and Fire Protection.
Furthermore, the next generation of IFC standards is expanding to include systems for construction drawing approvals, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and more.
With the release of Revit 2015, IFC files can now be directly linked to Revit projects, enhancing interoperability and workflow efficiency.
