Understanding the Difference Between Importing and Linking CAD Files in Revit

BIM Software Tips: The Difference Between Importing and Linking CAD Files in Revit

When you import a CAD file into Revit, any changes made to the original CAD file will not affect the imported file within your Revit project. On the other hand, if you link a CAD file, updates to the original CAD file will automatically be reflected in your Revit model.

If you are unsure whether the CAD file will need modifications, it is generally recommended to use the link option. Importing is better suited for scenarios where the CAD file will remain unchanged throughout the project.

Additionally, when linking a CAD file, you must always keep the original CAD file available. This means that if you copy or move your Revit project, the linked CAD file must be included as well; otherwise, the linked data will be lost in Revit.
