BIM Software Tip: Important Considerations When Exporting FBX Models from NW
When exporting FBX files from NW, one key question arises: do you want to export only the local model or the entire model? Fortunately, this can be easily controlled.
How to control the export scope?
The process is straightforward. Simply hide any unnecessary models in your current view. This approach is similar to how Revit handles NWC exports—what you see is what you get. Only the models visible in your current view will be exported, while all others remain hidden. Once the view is set, proceed to export the FBX file.
It’s important to note that this method relies on hiding elements. If you isolate the desired model using section boxes, exporting the FBX this way will not limit the export area. This behavior differs somewhat from Revit’s export process.
Finally, consider the version compatibility of the software you use. Which version of NW are you using to export the FBX? It’s best to open the FBX file with the corresponding version of 3ds Max. For example, if the FBX was exported from NW 2015, opening it with 3ds Max 2015 will provide the fastest performance. While other versions of 3ds Max can open the file, matching the versions ensures the quickest load times.
