BIM Software Tip: Unable to find the FDC file when starting AutoCAD
Issue:
When launching AutoCAD, you may encounter a message indicating that AcFields cannot find the FDC file. This message can also appear when trying to insert fields into a multiline text object or property definition.
Cause:
The AcFields support folder, defined as the roaming root folder in the Windows registry, cannot locate the required FDC file.
Solution:
The roaming root folder location in the Windows registry controls where AutoCAD looks for the AcFields FDC file. If this file is missing, AutoCAD will not be able to access it properly.
By default, this folder is set to:
C:Users
This path is stored in the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareAutodeskAutoCADRxx.xACAD-x001:409RoamableRootFolder
(Note: The ‘x’ values vary depending on your AutoCAD version.)
The internal ENU folder acts as the support directory where AutoCAD searches for the AcFields.FDC file. If this file is missing, you can copy it from the following location:
C:Program FilesAutodeskAutoCAD 201xUserDataCacheenu
Please be aware that the UserDataCache folder is hidden by default. You will need to enable the option to show hidden files and folders in Windows to access it.
