How to Modify the Reference Elevation of Structural Beams in Revit

BIM Software Tip: How to Change the Reference Elevation of Structural Beams in REVIT

When working with structural beam models, you may need to adjust their reference elevations. However, in most cases, when you select a beam, the reference elevation and work plane options appear grayed out and cannot be changed directly.

Here are three methods to modify the reference elevation of beams in REVIT:

Method 1: Select the beam and set the Start and End Point Offsets in its properties to a value, such as 1. This action unlocks the reference elevation, allowing you to choose a different floor level. After making your adjustment, reset the offset values back to zero. See the example below:

Method 2: Select the beam and use the Edit Work Plane command. From there, adjust the beam’s positioning within the work plane settings as needed. An illustration is shown below:

Method 3: Select the beam, cut it, and then paste it onto the desired floor. This effectively changes its reference elevation.
