BIM Software Tip: How to Convert Metric Windows to Curtain Wall Windows in Revit
Question: Sometimes you need to add doors or windows to a curtain wall. To replace curtain wall panels, you must use curtain wall-specific windows or doors. However, most door and window families are metric. So, how can you convert metric doors and windows into curtain wall versions?
(1) Select the metric window and enter the window family editing mode. In the family list, select the Basic Wall category. Then, duplicate Basic Wall 1 to create Basic Wall 2 as shown in (Figure-1). After that, delete Basic Wall 1 as shown in (Figure-2).
Note: Ignore any warning dialog boxes that appear during this process.
(2) Switch to the plan view and change the window width to an instance parameter. Then, in the elevation view, change the window height to an instance parameter using the same method. Save the family file afterward.
(3) Open the template file Metric Curtain Wall Panels and create a new panel family, as shown in (Figure-4). Next, go to the Insert tab, click Load from Library > Panel > Load Family, and load the family file you just saved, as seen in (Figure-5).
(4) Use the alignment tool to align and lock both sides of the window to the reference lines. Repeat this step in the elevation view to align and lock the top and bottom edges of the window height to the reference lines, as illustrated in (Figure-6).
(5) Load the updated family file into your project. Select the curtain wall, then choose the newly loaded family from the Properties dropdown menu, as shown in (Figure-7).
