BIM Software Tip: Understanding How Revit Columns Affect Room Boundaries
Recently, while working on a modeling project, I noticed an interesting interaction between columns and walls in Revit. Sometimes, the column boundary is treated as the room boundary, while other times, the room boundary cuts through the column itself. Curious about this behavior, I did some research and uncovered a useful technique.
During the modeling process, there is a default option enabled when placing columns, as illustrated in the image below:
2. We created two columns: one with the option checked, and the other without. They were placed as shown in the following image:
3. Next, we placed room boundaries to observe the differences, as seen in the picture below:
From these observations, we can draw some conclusions.
When placing columns, if the room boundary option is checked, the column boundary aligns with the room boundary. Conversely, if this option is unchecked, the column boundary is ignored in terms of room boundaries, and the room boundary is defined based on the wall edges instead.
