How to Import and Work with CAD Drawings in Revit

BIM Software Tip: Introduction to Handling CAD Drawings in Revit

1. Loading vs. Importing CAD Drawings in a Project

When working with CAD drawings in Revit, it’s important to understand the difference between loading and importing. Loading allows you to update the original drawing easily with simple operations, making it very convenient and easy to manage. On the other hand, importing treats the drawing as an element within the project. If you need to update the imported drawing, you must delete the original file and import it again.

Note: After importing a drawing, you might notice that it appears in the 3D view when you open it. However, you may not want this drawing visible in other views like the 3D view. To control this, make sure to select the option to display the drawing only in the current view.

2. Importing CAD Drawings into Families

There are several settings you can adjust when working with CAD drawings in family projects. These settings are designed to help streamline your design process.
