BIM Software Tip: Revit Displays the Same Type of Wall Differently
When designing, it’s often necessary to add surface fills, section fills, and apply line treatments to components. These adjustments are typically managed through visibility settings, object styles, and material properties. However, these settings apply to entire categories, meaning any change affects all instances within that category.
Sometimes, we want to quickly modify a single instance within a category without creating a new category or material just to adjust its fill. To save time, Revit offers the “Replace Graphics in View” feature (available by right-clicking a selected component). This option lets you replace graphics by element, by category, or by filter. Let’s see how this works in practice:
1. First, duplicate a wall type with identical settings.
2. Next, to change the cross-sectional fill of the wall instance below, right-click it and select “Replace Graphics in View”, then choose “By Element” (options include by element, by category, or by filter).
3. Modify the section representation as needed.
4. Notice how the same wall type now displays different appearances based on these changes.
