How Revit View Scale Affects View Detail Level

BIM Software Tip: Understanding the Relationship Between Revit View Scale and Detail Level

When working in Revit, creating a new view involves setting both the view scale and the detail level. Many users assume these two settings are independent and must be adjusted manually. However, the detail level is actually influenced by the view scale to some extent. So, where can you find this setting? Let’s explore:

1. Navigate to the Management Panel, then select Other Settings > Detail Level.

Here, you will notice that each detail level corresponds to multiple view scales. This means that when you create a new view scale that falls within a specific detail level range, the view’s detail level will automatically align with it. Keep in mind, this applies only to new views—such as when creating elevation views or detailed drawings; copied views do not count as new views.

For example, when you create a new elevation view and compare it, you will see this relationship in action:
