Best BIM Modeling Software for Your Projects

Many friends have asked the author, “Which BIM modeling software is the best?” There is no definitive answer to this question, as each BIM software offers unique strengths. It’s impossible to say one is universally better than the others. Below is a brief introduction to some of the mainstream BIM software currently popular in China. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs.

1. Autodesk BIM Series Software

Autodesk offers two major BIM software lines: Revit and AutoCAD.

The Revit series includes Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP. Revit features an intuitive interface and links designs across drawings, models, and components. It supports customizable components for highly flexible use and design. Additionally, Revit boasts a vast product database and supports various file formats such as RVA, DWG, DWF, DGN, GSM, SKP, IES, SAT, GBXML, HTML, IFC, and TXT. This extensive compatibility allows seamless information exchange with other software, making it convenient for users working across different platforms. However, Revit does have some parameter limitations when dealing with complex surfaces. Users should consider their specific requirements before choosing this software.

AutoCAD is built on solid and surface modeling and integrates with the BIM platform through 2D drawings. It offers highly flexible, user-defined components. AutoCAD’s powerful 2D drawing linking capabilities efficiently manage 2D documentation, but it only supports one-way 2D drawing data flow, lacking two-way information linkage. It can edit files in DWG, DGN, DWF, DXF, and IFC formats, and its functionality can be extended using AutoLISP and Visual Basic languages.

2. Graphisoft BIM Series Software

ArchiCAD features an intuitive user interface with automatic system control. Changes to any detail are managed through layered system linkages, allowing easy export of any surface. ArchiCAD comes with a large library of predefined data components, including floor plans, interior layouts, space plans, as well as materials and equipment components, all readily usable within the system. However, there are some limitations in user-defined modeling processes.

ArchiCAD supports information exchange with other BIM software via various file formats such as IF, IFC, and IES. The software has expanded its backend BIM database and enhanced database content through file exchange and tracking systems, improving interoperability and data management.

3. Bentley BIM Series Software

Bentley provides specialized software for structural calculations, component design, equipment management, energy analysis, and performance simulation. It also maintains a comprehensive set of standard drawing and model parameters and workflows. Through a compatible application interface, Bentley enables information linking and allows 2D drawings to be synchronized with 3D models. It supports building complex 3D surface models and defining geometric components with complex parameters.

However, Bentley lacks compatibility with other BIM software systems and information. The company is gradually acquiring other software and integrating them into its platform. Since these acquisitions come from various subsidiaries, the user interface across Bentley’s software portfolio can vary, which may create some inconvenience for users.

Bentley supports a wide range of file formats, including DWG, DXF, PDF, 3DS, Rhino 3DM, IGES, ACIS SAT, VRML, Google Earth KML, SKP, and IFC. Its functionality can be extended through user-defined methods using VBA, .NET, C#, C++, and Bentley MDL.

That concludes our overview of which BIM modeling software is good. We hope this article helps you make an informed choice!
