How to Create Plumbing Riser Tag Families in Revit
When working on single-discipline drawings, it’s often necessary to annotate water supply and drainage pipes. So, how can we create a pipe tag family to quickly label these pipes?
1. Start by creating a new tag family. Open the Metric Standard Tag template to create riser markers.
2. Set the tag family category by selecting Pipe Tag and make sure to enable the option to Rotate with Component.
3. Use the Create tab and select the Tag command to add labels in the view.
Typically, risers are marked using the Annotation property in the riser settings. To label the pipes correctly, add a label parameter set to Annotation when editing the labels. Click OK to finish creating a simple riser numbering family.
4. Open your project and load the riser tag family you just created. Now, you can tag the risers.
Note: Be sure to delete any existing red text in the family template before loading it into your project.
5. Before tagging, add annotations to the riser. Select the riser and input the annotation directly in the annotation field under the data list in the properties palette.
Note: If annotations were added during the modeling process, you can tag the riser directly. Otherwise, you will need to add an annotation to the riser before tagging it.
6. Next, specify the tag category for the tag family you created. Under the Annotations tab, find the Tag menu, click the dropdown arrow, and select Load Tags and Symbols. In the pop-up dialog, assign your tag family to the pipe/pipe placeholder category.
7. Finally, you can use the Tag by Category command from the Annotate tab. Hover over the riser you wish to tag, click to place the tag, and your riser will be labeled accordingly.
