How to Use Filter Settings in Revit: A Guide with Mechanical Templates

Filter Settings in Revit (Using Mechanical Templates as an Example)

When working on Revit projects, it’s often necessary to apply filters to better manage and organize your design elements. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to create the filters you need using a mechanical template.

1. First, launch Revit. Under the Project tab, click New. From the Template File dropdown, select Mechanical Template. Then, under the New tab, choose Project and click OK. The process is illustrated in the figure below:

2. Once the mechanical template project opens, locate and click on “View – Mechanical – HVAC – Floor Plan -1- Mechanical” in the project browser, as shown in the figure:

3. Under the System tab, select the Duct command. Next, navigate to the Attributes menu and under the Mechanical tab, use the System Type option to draw three duct sections labeled Air Supply, Return Air, and Exhaust. The figure below demonstrates this:

4. Then, open the Visibility/Graphics settings by clicking the corresponding command in the view options—or simply press the vv shortcut key. This opens the Visibility/Graphics dialog box. Click on the Filter tab, as shown in the figure:

5. Within the Filter options, click Add and select Mechanical – Air Supply, Mechanical – Return Air, and Mechanical – Exhaust filters. Click OK to confirm. Then, enable the checkboxes under Visibility to apply these filters as needed. This allows you to temporarily hide elements of specific system types. The figure below illustrates this step:

6. If you cannot find the appropriate system type in the Add Filter list, you can create or edit filters by clicking the Edit/Create (E) button next to the list. This opens the filter creation/editing options, as shown in the figure:

7. Click the Edit/Create (E) button to open the Filter tab. Click the New icon to create a new filter. Enter a name for your filter and confirm your choice.

8. Finally, select the categories and define the filtering criteria based on what you want to hide or display. This completes the creation of your new filter.
