BIM Software Tip: How to Fix Revit Startup Crashes

There are several common causes for Revit startup crashes:

  1. The graphics card does not support 3D acceleration.
  2. The graphics card supports 3D acceleration, but the driver configuration is incorrect.
  3. The Autodesk licensing process has been disabled by optimization software.
  4. Revit is incompatible with the current Internet Explorer (IE) version on the system.
  5. Autodesk Revit was not fully uninstalled before reinstallation.

Solutions:

1. Graphics card does not support 3D acceleration: Disable 3D acceleration by configuring the Revit.ini file.
Open the Revit.ini file, search for the UseGraphicsHardware setting, and set it to 0 (i.e., UseGraphicsHardware=0).
If the setting does not exist, add the line manually.

2. Graphics card supports 3D acceleration but driver configuration is incorrect: Update or reconfigure your graphics card driver.
It is recommended to download the latest WHQL-certified driver from the official website of your graphics card manufacturer.

3. Autodesk licensing service disabled by optimization software: Disable any optimization or security software such as 360 Security Guard or Kingsoft Guard that might block the FLEXnet Licensing Service 64 or FLEXnet Licensing Service.
Then, open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, locate the service, and set its startup type to Automatic or Manual.

4. Revit incompatible with the current IE version: Although rare, this issue can occur.
If you upgraded IE10 on Windows 7 SP1, try rolling back to IE9 by going to Programs and Features > View Installed Updates, uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 10, and restart your computer.

5. Incomplete uninstallation of Autodesk Revit: To completely uninstall Revit 201X and remove all residual files, follow these steps.
Make sure to back up any custom families or templates before proceeding. Log in as a local system administrator and disable any antivirus software.

On Windows XP, navigate to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the specific Revit 201X products.

On Windows Vista and Windows 7, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features to uninstall the Revit 201X products.

Also, uninstall the following Autodesk Material Libraries:

  • Autodesk Material Library 201X Medium
  • Autodesk Material Library 201X Base
  • Autodesk Material Library 201X Product

After uninstalling, manually delete these folders using Windows Explorer:

Windows XP (32-bit and 64-bit):

C:Program FilesAutodeskRevit 201X

C:Documents and Settings%username%Application DataAutodeskREVIT201X

Note: Folder paths may vary depending on the version and user-defined installation locations.

Delete residual registry entries:

Warning: Incorrect modification of the Windows registry can cause serious system issues. It is strongly recommended to back up the registry before making any changes.

(The following warning is from an official statement: improper registry editing may render your operating system unusable. Microsoft provides important information about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. For details, please visit the official Microsoft website.)

To proceed:

  • Open the registry editor via Start > Run > regedit.
  • Find and delete the following registry keys:
