BIM Software Tip: Converting Revit Metric Doors and Windows into Curtain Wall Embedded Doors and Windows
In some cases, you may need to add doors or windows within a curtain wall. While curtain wall doors and windows can replace curtain wall panels, there are many types of metric door and window families to consider. How can you convert existing metric doors and windows into curtain wall embedded doors and windows with replaceable panels? This guide explains the process, focusing on common rectangular flat curtain wall panels. (Note: Curved or irregular panels require separate replacements for doors and windows; there is no shortcut for these.)
Follow these steps:
1. Open the metric door or window family you want to convert. In the Project Browser, copy Basic Wall 1 to Basic Wall 2. Then, select Basic Wall 1 in the Project Browser, right-click, and delete it, as shown in the image below:
2. Open both the plan and elevation views. Change the width and height parameters of the window to instance parameters. (You may need to create new parameters because the original width and height are type parameters and cannot be modified.)
3. Create a new curtain wall panel family. Load the metric window into this family, place it in the center of the plan view, and use the align tool to align the window’s left and right edges with the existing left and right reference lines. Lock these alignments. Switch to the elevation view and align the top and bottom of the window with the corresponding reference lines, then lock them as well.
This ensures that replacing a panel with a window will fill the entire panel space. If you want to adjust the curtain wall window grid parameters within the project, you can link additional parameters from the metric window to the curtain wall panel family. This way, the parameters from the metric window are passed through to the curtain wall panel, as illustrated in the figure below:
4. Create a new project and load the curtain wall window family you just created. Draw a curtain wall, select one of its panels, and replace it with your new curtain wall embedded window. You can then modify the parameters you linked earlier as needed.
