BIM Software Tip: How to Remove Stubborn Layers in CAD
Method 1: Turn off the unnecessary layers, select all objects, copy them, and then paste them into a new file. The unwanted layers will not be carried over. However, if a block defined on an unwanted layer is inserted into another layer, this method will not allow you to delete that layer.
Method 2: Select the graphics you want to keep, then go to the File menu and choose Output > Block File. This creates a block file containing only the selected graphics. Layers that are not present in the selected graphics will not be saved in this new block file.
Method 3: Open the CAD file and turn off the layers you want to delete, leaving only the visible graphics you need on the drawing surface. Then, go to File > Save As, choose a file name, and select DXF format from the file type dropdown. In the pop-up dialog, click Tools > Options > DXF Options, check the Object Selection box, click OK, and then click Save. When prompted, select the visible or desired objects to save. After saving, close and reopen the new file—you will notice that the unwanted layers are no longer present.
Method 4: Use the laytrans command to map the layer you want to delete to layer 0. This approach allows you to remove layers containing solid objects or nested definitions within other blocks.
