How to Properly Close *BAK Files in CAD Software

BIM Software Tip: How to Disable *BAK Files in CAD

1) Go to Tools ‐ Options, then select the Open and Save tab. In the dialog box, uncheck the option labeled Create a backup every time you save.

2) Alternatively, you can use the ISAVEBAK command to change the system variable ISAVEBAK to 0. When this variable is set to 1, CAD creates a *BAK backup file each time you save your work.

Sometimes, the coordinate display box located at the lower-left corner of the CAD drawing area may turn gray. If the coordinates do not update as you move your mouse within the drawing area, here’s what you can do:

Press the F6 key or adjust the COORDS system variable to 1 or 2.

The meaning of the COORDS system variable values is as follows:

  • 0 — Coordinate display updates only when specifying a point with a pointing device.
  • 1 — Coordinates are updated continuously.
  • 2 — Coordinates are updated continuously, showing distance and angle relative to the previous point, useful when measuring distance and angle.
