BIM Software Tip: How to Set Structural Support Symbols in Revit
Support symbols are controlled through specific settings in the dialog box, which precisely manage how these symbols appear. The illustration below demonstrates this setup.
Plan View Representation
· Parallel Lines: In a plan view, a support symbol is represented by a line parallel to the support itself. This line is positioned based on the value set in the “Structure Setting” dialog box, offset from the actual support. If the support is located below the elevation, the line will appear below (or to the right of) the vertical support centerline. Conversely, if the support is above the elevation, the line will be displayed above (or to the left of) the vertical support centerline.
Parallel line support symbols only appear when the support’s purpose is set to Vertical Support. In this case, only angled line support symbols are shown in the plan view.
Note: You can create new support symbols using standard annotation templates. Within the Family Category and Family Parameters dialog box, set the Family Category to Support Symbol in Plan View. Then, in the Supporting Symbols in Plan View – Representing Type parameter, choose from options such as Parallel Lines, Angled Line, or Reinforced Support.
Additional support settings allow you to specify symbols that indicate supports located above or below the current view, as well as reinforced supports. To display these symbols, select Display Support Above and Display Support Below. When switching the plan representation from parallel lines to angled lines, the symbols will update automatically. You can also select or load additional symbols for each support as needed.
Finally, only when the support’s purpose is set to Reinforced Support can the reinforced support symbol be displayed in the plan view.
