Situated at the confluence of the Yingge and Dahan Rivers, the New Taipei City Museum of Art enjoys a gently sloping terrain. To the north, Guilun Mountain rises, while to the south, visitors can admire the views of Dahan River and the Xueshan Mountains. Drawing inspiration from the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage, the design team harmoniously blends rustic brick architecture with natural elements such as swaying reeds, resulting in a contemporary and visionary architectural form.

The design masterfully merges natural and manmade elements. Its distinctive façade features a series of sandblasted aluminum tubes of varying heights and lengths arranged in a staggered pattern, combined with vertically divided three-color aluminum panels also staggered. From a distance, this linear composition evokes the image of reeds swaying gently in the wind—blurry yet captivating. This design reflects the ever-changing natural landscape on the exterior walls, drawing visitors in with its unique architectural presence and allowing them to experience the dynamic beauty of nature.

The ground floor unfolds into a network of art streets and sculpture terraces, forming a vast ‘village’ atmosphere. Embracing the philosophy of being ‘open to everyone,’ the museum invites visitors to freely explore its outdoor terraces, which feature cafés, studios, and restaurants. The spatial arrangement echoes the charm of a traditional local street. Visitors can engage in various art activities, admire outdoor installations, or ascend the brick-paved pathway to the hilltop to take in breathtaking views.

Above this vibrant ‘village,’ the steel-structured art museum appears to float in the sky. Its rigid rectangular form is concealed behind a façade composed of countless vertical pipes of varying heights, reminiscent of swaying reed beds. The expansive structural system offers great flexibility for exhibition spaces. A grand staircase leads visitors to the elevated second-floor hall, where four exhibition types await: general, large, international, and special exhibition halls. On the rooftop, a garden restaurant offers diners stunning views of Dahan Creek. Another notable feature is the dedicated access channel to the operations management center and collection warehouse, significantly enhancing daily operational and security efficiency.

The open art village features raw concrete materials that highlight the geological formations shaped by the erosion of the Dahan River. The concrete walls bear slanted cedar wood imprints, creating a striking contrast with the rough, chiseled textures on the building’s upper and side surfaces. Together with brick-paved paths, these rugged concrete walls form a winding, dynamic spatial composition that integrates art and nature seamlessly.

At the site entrance, the landscape bridge constructed from weather-resistant steel will develop a unique patina over time. This structure complements the museum’s natural setting and acts as a welcoming gateway, guiding visitors into the heart of the museum experience.
