Last week marked the official opening of the Alibaba Shanghai campus office building in Xuhui Binjiang, equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Designed by Foster+Partners, this innovative workspace fully embodies Alibaba’s corporate spirit while redefining the traditional office environment.
Focusing on public spaces and embracing openness and transparency, the design fosters a strong connection between people and nature. It offers a variety of collaborative areas tailored to meet the dynamic needs of Alibaba’s team structure. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

“We are honored to participate in the unveiling of Alibaba’s new Shanghai office,” said Luke Fox, head of Foster+Partners studio. “Our design leverages the exceptional location to create a highly collaborative workplace centered around a climate-responsive public space that invites people to explore and experience the interior.”
“From the outset, we focused on seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor areas, balancing public and private spaces,” he added.

The building is organized around a central open-plan public space that welcomes visitors and fosters social interaction. This vibrant hub leads to the main entrance, with a viewing terrace above overlooking the central square.
The architecture emphasizes transparency, allowing glimpses into Alibaba’s internal world while preserving expansive outward views. Multiple outdoor terraces provide perfect settings for daily socializing and various activities.
The flexible floor plan enhances adaptability throughout the building. Health and well-being are core priorities; a spacious green terrace offers employees stunning views of the Huangpu River and Pudong CBD, while the central public space reinforces the bond with the outdoors. All workspace curtain walls include ventilators to enable natural airflow, creating a healthy and efficient working environment.

To meet Alibaba’s requirements, Foster+Partners utilized genetic algorithms to optimize the building’s form, harmonize it with the surrounding environment, maximize views of external landscapes, and satisfy the spatial needs of various functional zones.
“This innovative design process reflects our deep understanding of Alibaba’s organizational structure and their philosophy of co-creation and success,” said Jeremy Kim, partner at Foster+Partners.
“By applying genetic algorithms, we quickly assessed thousands of design options to select and refine the best solution. The building is crafted to foster stronger collaboration, innovation, and well-being for the future of office work.”
