The Wangen Tower and Mixed Linen Exhibition Hall were constructed for the Landesgartenschau state horticultural exhibition in Wangen, Aargau, Germany. These projects represent a collaboration between the ICD and ITKE research institutes at the University of Stuttgart.
Originating from the research conducted by the Excellence Cluster “Integrated Computational Design and Construction of Buildings (IntCDC)”, these buildings highlight innovative approaches to regenerative and expressive design. They emphasize the use of biobased materials and biomimetic structures.

The Mixed Linen Exhibition Hall serves as the centerpiece of the State Horticultural Exhibition Site, situated along the winding banks of the recently restored Argen River. This hall showcases a new hybrid construction system developed by the IntCDC cluster, combining wood and natural fibers as an alternative to conventional building methods.

This innovative hybrid system merges thin laminated wood layers with machine-wound linen fiber elements, creating a resource-efficient building structure made from regionally sourced biobased materials. Flax, historically significant in the local textile industry, plays a vital role, with the old spinning mill renovated as part of the horticultural exhibition.

The exhibition hall features a gently undulating roof, a circular floor plan, and a central climate garden, seamlessly integrating the interior space with the surrounding landscape. Geothermal-activated floor panels, constructed from recycled concrete, ensure year-round comfort in this permanent building.
