Starting Point:
Can a typical talent apartment be transformed into something more engaging? Located in the Future Science and Technology City of Jiangning District, Nanjing, this project occupies a narrow, corner-facing strip of land. Apartments serve as basic living units, and the design’s goal is to break the monotony of the strip and enrich the living experience.

Breaking Open:
The concept of breaking apart is both physical and spiritual. The architectural expansion reveals new cross-sections to the city, while the spatial expansion signals shifts in lifestyle. For a generation increasingly attached to their phones, this design encourages a reconnection with authentic, real-life experiences.

City Response:
The fragmented design of the building addresses the urban corner, making the structure more integrated with its surroundings. In this new residential-focused district, such fragmentation creates continuity within the urban fabric and establishes local spatial hotspots in an otherwise one-way cityscape.

Order:
The breaking open of the building creates a striking contrast between the orderly exterior shell and the chaotic rupture within. These two disciplined exterior frameworks reflect the characteristics of the apartment units. The interplay between order and disruption lends the architecture a powerful, rhythmic presence.

Chaos:
The rupture created by the breaking open results in a chaotic junction. However, this chaos reveals a duality—a sense of freedom emerging from destruction. A fulfilling life demands stepping beyond mechanical routines to embrace richness and variety.

Vertical Street:
Every architect carries an image of Kowloon Walled City in their heart. The cracks within the building serve as communal spaces on each floor. These spaces can host bookstores, coffee shops, flower shops, or even barbecue spots.

This vertical street inside the building becomes a vibrant hub where young residents gaze out at the city, socialize, and seek meaningful connections.
