Function
The original Nantou City Community Center served as the Community Health Service Center and the Party and Mass Service Center, with residents living on the upper floors. Following renovation, the building now accommodates community hospitals, administrative offices, party and mass offices, cultural exhibitions, classrooms, and conference rooms. This multifunctional space provides administrative support, improves daily life for Nantou residents, and offers essential medical and health services.

Design Strategy
Openness and impurity are central themes in the design approach. The building’s complex functions, along with varied volumes, forms, and materials, create a mixed-use structure enriched by diverse open spaces. This combination gives the building a distinctive urban character.

The reconstruction design addresses diverse functional needs by breaking down the building into four distinct volumes, inspired by the scale of urban village architecture. Each volume is physically transformed to accommodate specific functions and circulation, resulting in a complex, dynamic mixed-use structure.
Public spaces are designed to extend vertically. Open corridors between floors create a network of tunnels that complement and enhance the site, integrating surrounding pathways into a three-dimensional street system.

Additionally, an external open staircase connects the “alleyways” across each floor vertically. These stairs and platforms, interspersed between volumes, add dynamic elements that enliven the building and serve as public spaces for activities, gatherings, and relaxation. They are essential areas fostering community interaction and daily life for residents.

Materials
The façade features a blend of green and red bricks arranged in varying proportions. Each building volume showcases unique façade characteristics, balancing unity with variation. Doors and windows are customized according to the volume’s features and functional requirements, all contributing to a cohesive yet diverse “impurity space.”

The Nantou City Community Center uses its distinct architectural language to express Shenzhen’s open, diverse, and inclusive cultural spirit within the historic context of Nantou Ancient City.
