In the new era of refined urban development in China, integrating design, construction, and building use has become essential for enhancing building quality. Implementing these requirements effectively on the frontline remains a major challenge for design teams.

This project involves the high school campus of Xi’an High tech No.1 Middle School, located in the heart of Xi’an High tech Zone. Covering approximately 45.6 acres, the site is bordered by Tangyan Road to the east and Science and Technology Third Road to the south. The existing campus includes three teaching buildings and one dormitory.
With rapid urban development and rising educational demands due to the new national college entrance examination reform, the high school faces challenges such as insufficient teaching space and traffic congestion around the campus. Therefore, the original campus urgently requires renovation and expansion.

Analyzing both urban and educational contexts, the project embraces the concept of “book mountains and green islands, climbing up the ladder.” It is guided by two key principles: “school community sharing” and “three-dimensional development.”
Working closely with the school, government agencies, and construction partners, the design team outlined three final strategies for the project:
1. Expand the campus scale with a dense layout, ensuring coordinated urban integration.
2. Promote community sharing and multifunctional three-dimensional spaces to address on-campus and off-campus issues.
3. Apply minimalist modern design to innovate and lead the urban landscape and image.

Construction began in August 2021 and after two years of design and building, the project was completed and handed over in late August 2023. Named the Xi’an High tech No.1 Middle School (High School Division) Renovation and Expansion and Social Shared Parking Lot Construction Project, it reflects a comprehensive approach to preliminary planning.
The total construction area covers 78,549.31 square meters, with 49,886.68 square meters above ground (including 48,831.17 square meters of usable space) and 28,662.63 square meters underground, resulting in a floor area ratio of 1.61. The main teaching building (Xuebo Building) was preserved, while auxiliary structures were updated or rebuilt.

The new construction includes a comprehensive teaching building with dormitories, an elevated playground featuring a sports hall and lecture hall, a sunken courtyard with surrounding auxiliary teaching spaces, a two-level underground parking facility, and an outdoor transportation corridor. Throughout the process, the design team integrated city planning, campus layout, architectural form, functionality, and cost control to ensure the project’s successful completion.
