Located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula along the Gulf of Mexico, the small town of Chicxulub Puerto lies adjacent to the seaside city of Progreso.

Chicxulub Market Square occupies a key location in the town, surrounded by some of the most important thoroughfares. Its urban setting allows strong connections to vital local amenities, the natural environment of the peninsula, and the neighboring regions.

The renovation of the square and the construction of the market are integrated as a unified project, carefully designed according to the plan and its relationship with the open space. The square serves dual purposes, divided into two distinct zones: the northern side features a sports field along with vegetation and shaded areas, while the southern market area includes booth structures that provide shade, encouraging walking and resting. Throughout the day, these components are interconnected through complementary and transitional open spaces that harmonize with the surrounding environment.

The market itself lies to the south of the square and comprises four sales areas and one service area, all covered by a series of inverted eaves. The roofs interconnect through skylights that protect the interior of the booths, the corridors between them, and the resting areas. Each market district contains six sales booths arranged in two rows of three. The service area houses administrative offices, storage rooms, power distribution, laundry facilities, waste disposal, and restrooms, which also serve the square.

The arrangement of these volumes creates a passage square at one corner of the site, linking with the adjacent commercial facade. The east-west orientation of the building volumes and their separation allows permeability between roads, interior spaces, and landscaped courtyards and squares.

The square centers around a lush garden, which hosts the richest vegetation and creates shaded, restful spaces outdoors for community engagement. Alongside the natural shade, there is also a covered sports field integrated into the square, serving as a gathering point for civic and social activities.
