The Central Park Command Center is part of the first phase of the Central Park development project in Futian District, Shenzhen. The building combines temporary container modules with permanent steel structures, designed to be dismantled in phases throughout the park’s construction and future operational needs. During construction, it functions as the engineering command center and office space. Once the park is complete, the building’s volume will be reduced, repurposed to host ecological classrooms, exhibition halls, and public services.

The two main challenges at the start of the design process were integrating and separating the permanent and temporary building components, and ensuring the large office and exhibition spaces harmonized with the surrounding park landscape. To facilitate future phased dismantling, the architect connected the temporary container units and steel structures with curved grids, creating a semi-outdoor interface that shifts with light and shadow. This gentle curve embraces the natural environment around it.

A white aluminum grille is arranged sequentially between the square volumes at a 45° angle, forming an arc-shaped silhouette. The transition from solid to void is achieved with a variable-angle cross-section. This layer of light-and-shadow skin acts as a canvas for tree shadows during the day, while at night it allows indoor lighting to filter through, creating a curtain of light.

Situated within a park setting, the building features extensive window openings in main exhibition halls, conference rooms, and office areas. These allow natural light and ecological views to penetrate deeply indoors. The staggered angles of the different structural units create dynamic connection spaces such as entrance lobbies, stairwells, and semi-outdoor courtyards that engage with the external landscape.

As a flexible building designed to adapt as its functions evolve, it will be interesting to witness its transformation after the park’s completion, when some temporary structures are partially removed and operational roles change.
