Design Inspiration – Flying Dreams in Aviation Town
The Qiandao Lake General Terminal, situated in Jiande Aviation Town, Zhejiang, serves as a key supporting facility for the Hangzhou Asian Games. It carries the dual purpose of marking the gateway to Hangzhou’s international city and advancing the development of the aviation town. This terminal is designed to embody aviation spirit, reflect local characteristics, and offer distinctive functions that set it apart from ordinary transportation hubs.
Design Features: Setting the Terminal Apart from Typical Transportation Facilities
The Jiande Qiandao Lake General Terminal incorporates numerous unconventional facilities and spaces, enhancing the aviation experience. Notably, it includes both indoor and outdoor observation areas. The sloping roof, aligned with the tower’s view, is cleverly used to create a stepped terrace for air show viewing. This design facilitates future air shows, flight demonstrations, and competitions. Additionally, the terminal houses aviation-themed educational spaces, low-altitude tourism zones, and aviation school training areas.
Structure and Materials: Achieving a Dynamic and Elegant Appearance
The steel structure features widely spaced cantilevered canopies. After thorough structural analysis, the optimized cross-sectional dimensions were confirmed to meet architectural requirements. The terminal’s core design concept reflects the aspiration for the open sky and defiance of gravity. The exterior facade combines pure white matte aluminum panels with high-reflectivity coated glass curtain walls, giving the building a graceful yet lively presence.
Setting a New Standard for General Aviation Terminals
This project integrates the control tower with the main terminal building, which is a departure from the typical arrangement where the tower is a separate, supporting structure. The tower is positioned along Airport Yingbin Avenue, with an aluminum screen wall that presents a mostly solid facade to the road. The primary facade facing away from the road clearly distinguishes itself from conventional terminals, enhancing the building’s recognition and identity.
