Sanqiao Asian Games Park is situated on the south bank of the Qiantang River in Hangzhou’s Binjiang District, just north of the Qianjiang Sanqiao Bridge. It faces the south side of the Olympic Sports Center “Da Lianhua” across Wentao Road. The design vision is to create a new waterfront along the Qiantang River that fuses urban development, human-centered design, ecology, smart technology, local culture, and future-forward thinking.

This project marks the first phase of a 12-kilometer waterfront public space renovation and upgrade, led by Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Original Design Studio, located in Hangzhou’s Binjiang District.

This initiative plays a key role in Binjiang District’s Asian Games events and reflects a deep commitment to the Asian Games’ preparation philosophy of “hosting a successful event and enhancing the city.” The design is anchored in the overarching concept of “Orange Blue Ribbon, Super Seawall, and Urban Slicing.” It extends from “Asian Games” to “Asian Games+,” creating a 17.4-kilometer city sports experience corridor without physical barriers.

It transitions from “Safety” to “Safety+” by constructing a multifunctional riverside super seawall that supports diverse activities, and from “Daily” to “Daily+” by forming multi-themed urban sections that connect waterfront public spaces with urban hinterlands.

Orange Blue Ribbon – This concept enhances the existing riverside public space in Binjiang District, which already benefits from ecological heritage and has been accessible as a lively waterfront for years. The “Orange Blue Ribbon” is a comprehensive and systematic upgrade along the Yangtze River, connecting the Orange and Blue lanes fully and guiding visitors toward the Yundu Post Station.

The running lane is elevated above adjacent buildings, becoming an architectural feature that offers varying river views and walking experiences at different heights. This design creates a multi-dimensional urban landscape that unfolds across spatial levels.

Super Seawall – This element creatively merges water conservancy infrastructure with public space design. It aligns with the Zhejiang Provincial Water Resources Department’s initiative for the Anlan billion-dollar seawall project, integrating upgrades into the riverside landscape.

While maintaining the guardrail height along the river, the design incorporates an artistic concrete wave-dissipating platform, raising the seawall to 10.3 meters and extending its upgrade over roughly 4.5 kilometers. The seawall’s defense standard around Hangzhou Bay improves from a 100-year flood resistance to a 300-year standard, significantly enhancing flood protection.

Urban Slicing – This spatial strategy strengthens the connection between the riverside and the city. Multiple “urban slices” are arranged throughout the site, clearing green spaces and linking pathways.

Inspired by wave forms, these landscape elements include tree pools, rest pavilions, exhibition walls, and sports equipment unified by a consistent design language. Combined with the tree species on both sides, this creates a distinctive vertical river channel.

Sanqiao Asian Games Park, the northern gateway to Hangzhou Binjiang Public Space, features key nodes such as a skateboard park, wetland park, Yundu Post Station, and Asian Games micro hill. During recent site assessments by the Hangzhou Greenway Construction Promotion Coordination Group, the “Riverside Section of the Riverside Greenway in Binjiang District” was honored as the “Most Beautiful Greenway in Hangzhou in 2023.”

Ecological Response – Sanqiao Asian Games Wetland Park is the most representative of the nine new parks along the Yangtze River. It provides multiple functions, including wetland conservation, environmental education, ecological sightseeing, and recreational activities, allowing residents to enjoy the natural water environment.

Sports Response – Sanqiao Asian Games Skateboarding Park is among the three new sports parks built along the Yangtze River project. It connects seamlessly with the Olympic Sports Center and covers approximately 3,800 square meters. Facilities include basketball courts, extreme skateboarding areas, children’s sand pits, and rocking horses.

Event Response – The Three Bridges Asian Games Sculpture addresses the elevation differences on the south side of the Asian Games Micro Hill near Wentao Road. Its design draws from the colors of the Asian Games logo and incorporates the Olympic year number into concrete panels. This sculpture is one of eight major art installations along the Yangtze River project, providing a space for pedestrians to rest and learn about the Asian Games.

Artistic Response – The Binjiang Art Concrete Prefabricated Blue Transparent Concrete Fence enhances the continuity between the railing and the pavement. It combines comfort for citizens and tourists, ease of viewing, and attractive lighting, becoming a new landmark for the vibrant Binjiang area.

Functional Response – Yundu Post Station spans a total built area of 1,945.4 square meters, featuring one underground floor and one above-ground floor. The underground level is constructed with concrete, while the above ground uses steel framing. The building measures 104 meters in length, 30 meters wide, and 7.9 meters high.

Originally the cruise terminal on the east side of Qianjiang Third Bridge for the Olympic Sports Center, Yundu Post Station has been reimagined for the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games to serve both its original terminal functions and new urban basic services.

The design incorporates a dynamic “surgical operation” approach, seamlessly integrating the building with its site through structural folding and the creation of a public activity roof. This blurs traditional urban boundaries, inviting more social interaction.

To create a “floating blue path” and a long, winding landscape sequence, auxiliary spaces such as restrooms, management rooms, and equipment areas are concealed underground. Above ground, steel structures form a repeating pattern of four diamond-shaped blocks, each supported by pairs of horizontal and V-shaped diagonal rods. The roof is elevated by these blocks, achieving a lightweight structure with large overhangs and a slim 200mm eave thickness, giving a floating and transparent architectural feel.

Yundu Post Station offers a continuous, interactive, and rich spatial experience by blending interior and exterior, near and far views, and artificial and natural elements. The Asian Games will infuse event-oriented features into Yundu Post and Sanqiao Asian Games Park, where functions such as dock gathering, resting, sightseeing, and sports activities will become part of everyday life. Ultimately, Yundu Post will reclaim its role as an accessible urban hub and vibrant social stage.
