To support the development of Huigu Lake Science and Technology Innovation Town, the Bailuwan Demonstration Zone repurposes three existing abandoned buildings through renovation or reconstruction. This initiative aims to provide functional spaces for planning displays, conference offices, and leisure amenities, serving both citizens and visitors.
Conceptual Interpretation
Surrounded by mountains and water, Huigu Lake offers a pristine and ecological natural landscape. The distant mountains stretch in shades of green, the lake ripples gently, and the forest waves lightly in the breeze. Within this stunning natural setting, the design team aims to foster a profound connection between people and nature through architecture, highlighting the inherent power of the natural environment.
Building Analysis
The original Building 1 features both strengths and weaknesses; while its design lacks hierarchy, the overall structure is of good quality. The approach taken was to preserve and reinforce the original structure while renovating and renewing its main framework.
Building 2, constructed from brick and concrete, presented several challenges for renovation. Thus, the team opted to rebuild it entirely on the original site.
Building 3 is well preserved, exhibiting a harmonious facade rhythm. Minimal intervention was applied to maintain its integrity.
Design Approach to Boundaries
For Building 1’s renovation, the core strategy was to soften the building’s volume and boundaries. By manipulating elements like boxes, roofs, corridors, and indoor-outdoor spaces, multiple breathing spaces were introduced into the otherwise rigid structure.
Building 2’s design breaks the mass into smaller components, achieving a fragmented form through techniques such as localized lifting, roof recessing, and platform overhangs.
Pathway Design
The spatial core platform weaves together the mountains and water, organizing pathways that create a unique landscape experience of walking, viewing, and living. By adapting to the local environment, skillfully integrating natural features, and thoughtfully managing movement, the project establishes an organic, multi-level walking system that blends nature and architecture.
Details
The project achieves organic unity from the overall design down to local details through thoughtful material selection. Emphasizing authenticity and natural elements, it contrasts light and dark tones to draw attention while blending harmonious color schemes that reflect the surrounding environment. Features like hollow walls and wooden grilles contribute to a natural, painterly effect.
Vision
The project addresses both physical and spiritual needs, offering a retreat from busy daily life. It invites people to find inner peace and balance in an environment harmoniously integrated with nature. Visitors can experience the flow and changes of water, observe the shifting light over the lake, and feel the tranquility of the distant mountains—realizing an ideal life described as “dreaming in poetry and painting, heart in the mountains and waters.”
