What exactly qualifies software or a system as a BIM platform? Currently, there is no precise definition—much like BIM itself lacks a unified explanation. To clarify, I will share an expert’s perspective on the essential features a BIM platform should possess.
First and foremost, a BIM platform must enable seamless integration of 3D GIS and BIM data without any loss of attribute information.
This requirement stems from two key considerations. Any engineering project is inherently linked to geographic information; without it, the project becomes nothing more than “a castle in the air.” Additionally, integrating GIS—which has been developed over the past 40 years—directly enhances BIM applications.
Second, the platform must support international standards such as IFC, alongside mainstream BIM file formats.
Currently, major BIM design software includes Autodesk Revit, Bentley Building, Graphisoft ArchiCAD, Dassault CATIA, and others. However, these programs generate model files that are incompatible with each other and cannot be directly read. Therefore, a BIM platform must be compatible with the most widely used BIM model formats and adhere to the international IFC standard.
Third, it should support the operation and application of BIM models throughout their entire lifecycle.
The platform must overcome the limitations of current BIM software, which typically focuses on design and construction phases only. By integrating with 5D databases, the platform can maintain and update various versions and attribute information of BIM models, enabling full lifecycle management. The combination of a BIM platform with a 5D database represents the optimal solution for comprehensive BIM lifecycle applications.
Fourth, the platform needs to support multiple modes of operation: Client/Server (C/S), Browser/Server (B/S), and cloud services.
With the increasing diversity of intelligent terminals, offering several operational modes is essential. Each mode has its own advantages and complements the others, maximizing the value of BIM models. In particular, cloud services for BIM hold great promise and are widely anticipated in the industry.
Fifth, the platform must have the capability to integrate heterogeneous systems.
These systems include the Internet of Things (IoT), video monitoring, intelligent building control, mobile internet, smart terminals, and more. Only by supporting open interfaces and integrating these diverse systems can a BIM platform achieve vitality and broad application potential.
Sixth, it must support application services for multiple BIM projects simultaneously.
A true BIM platform cannot be limited to supporting just one project. If a system only supports a single project, it should be considered a system rather than a platform. A BIM platform must facilitate concurrent management and application of multiple BIM projects.
Seventh, the platform should allow for customized development of personalized applications.
This capability indicates two important aspects: first, the platform can meet growing demands for varied BIM applications, providing a solid foundation for diverse and innovative uses; second, it demonstrates that the platform owner holds independent intellectual property rights and mastery of core technologies.
Eighth, the platform needs to support fast 3D browsing of large-scale BIM model data.
Large projects such as commercial complexes, shopping plazas, urban landmarks, rail transit, and municipal engineering generate massive amounts of BIM data. The platform must enable smooth and efficient browsing of entire BIM models on common market hardware configurations.
Ninth, it must support applications on mobile devices and smartphones.
With the rise of 4G and the mobile internet era, terminals have become critical in internet development. Mobile terminals are evolving in two significant ways: focusing closely on user needs by providing comprehensive services and integrating terminals with those services, and achieving terminal diversification. Therefore, BIM platforms must support mobile applications to keep pace with these trends.
In summary, these nine points outline what a BIM platform should encompass. We believe that BIM platforms represent a major technological breakthrough and will revolutionize the future development of BIM technology.
