Clearing Up Common Misconceptions About BIM in Local Design Firms

Currently, BIM is rapidly developing in China and is highly valued by both clients and construction parties. However, it appears to be less popular among design institutes, with only a few older institutes adopting it, each for their own reasons. Today, the editor will discuss some common misconceptions about BIM among domestic design institutes.

(1) Believing BIM is a high-end technology. This is a misunderstanding. BIM represents the future and will become a standard practice. Design technology using BIM may soon become a necessary qualification for every designer and engineer.

(2) Thinking BIM is difficult to master. While BIM can indeed be challenging compared to 2D design software like AutoCAD, the key difference lies in the fact that every stage and step in BIM follows specific rules that must be adhered to. Mastering these rules requires time and effort, but it does not demand advanced application skills or a strong background in computer science.

(3) Assuming BIM can be quickly learned. This misconception often leads to frustration and even abandonment of learning BIM midway. Some software providers offer crash courses lasting only a few days, which may give beginners the false impression that BIM can be mastered in a week or two. In reality, becoming proficient with BIM takes several months and requires a proper BIM environment.

(4) Believing BIM greatly improves design institute productivity. BIM technology enhances overall efficiency across design, construction, and operation phases, more so than within a single design process. For designers, BIM may initially increase the amount of information input and workload, but these efforts are compensated through improved collaboration. In the long term, design institutes that adopt BIM will gain significant advantages in competitive bidding.

(5) Thinking having a BIM-capable team is enough. In fact, future competitiveness depends on adopting BIM comprehensively throughout the organization, not just within isolated teams.
