Efficient Transformation of Underused Spaces – Revitalizing Urban Life

Traditional large commercial complexes often use their rooftops to house various equipment, pipelines, and skylights. While these functional elements are essential for the building’s operation, they tend to clutter the rooftop, making the space chaotic and unappealing. This issue is common in many urban integrated buildings, where rooftops are frequently overlooked and become underutilized negative spaces.
The challenge is how to transform these ineffective rooftop areas. Common approaches include rooftop gardens, terraces, or activity spaces. Although these solutions add functionality, they remain traditional and limited, often failing to attract people. A successful rooftop design must carefully assess the building’s conditions, strategically plan the spatial layout, and conceal mechanical elements like equipment and pipelines. Through creative design techniques, these neglected spaces can be transformed into vibrant, active areas.

Increasingly, commercial complexes are exploring innovative ways to utilize rooftop spaces. The Tianjin Zhonghai Huanyu City Skateboarding Park, designed by DAGA Grand View Architecture, is a prime example. It transforms an overlooked rooftop platform into a lively social hub, injecting new energy into the city. By introducing street sports like skateboarding, the space attracts enthusiasts who then bring along family and friends, creating a multifunctional gathering area that revitalizes the rooftop and urban environment.
This approach not only refreshes commercial rooftops but also enriches the overall experience for visitors. It fosters dynamic social interactions and becomes a vital source of urban vitality.

To encourage visitors to move from the mall interior to the rooftop and engage in activities, the design introduces a surreal aerial streetscape that captures attention and masks rooftop mechanical equipment. This dreamlike space features sidewalks, streetlights, traffic signals, and bus stops, blending reality with fantasy. The intersecting streets create a natural crossroads bustling with pedestrian activity.
The scale and atmosphere evoke the feel of a small town, making the rooftop a pleasant place to walk and exercise.

The pump track is divided into three sections, each catering to different skateboarding skills. The wave area is ideal for beginners, full of fun, and popular among children—even those new to skateboarding enjoy running freely here, turning it into a playground. The U-shaped track offers varied challenges, attracting seasoned skateboarders whose impressive moves draw many spectators.
Additionally, the “sky street” provides ample space replicating a real street skateboarding experience. Adjacent to this area, yellow pipes and container benches form a circular resting zone where adults can relax, socialize, or watch their children practice.

Children enjoy carefree play, transforming the park into their playground. Teen skateboarders express speed and passion on the ramps, while parents watch and socialize nearby. Visitors stroll, take photos, and check in on social media. Even mall staff occasionally relax here, savoring moments of calm. Despite Tianjin’s scorching 40°C summer heat, the park remains lively and bustling.
