The team led by Meng Jianmin from the Shenzhen Architectural Design and Research Institute, in collaboration with Mecanoo and Lola Landscape, has won the international design competition for the Shenzhen Bright Scientists Valley. This project aims to establish a research and innovation hub that encourages greater public engagement while harmonizing with the surrounding natural environment.
Covering an area of approximately 1.2 square kilometers, the site boasts a prime geographical location and serves a broad scientific community extending from Guangdong to Hong Kong and Macau.

The Shenzhen Guangming Scientists Valley is situated between the Liantang Reservoir and Loucun Reservoir, nestled within the valley space that lies between the two. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and water bodies, the site offers significant ecological advantages for the innovation center.
This competition emphasizes the site’s regional potential through the concept of a “Science Forest,” encouraging design teams to integrate all natural elements into their proposals.

The winning design centers on the concept of the “Valley of Coexistence,” emphasizing “temporary restoration and selective construction” to ensure a sustainable long-term impact on the environment.
The proposal features a diverse public cluster composed of three distinct parts: a public ring road, a research center, and a surrounding natural layer. This strategy, named the “1001 Forest Garden” by the design team, aims to foster collaboration between scientists and the public while promoting balanced coexistence within the valley.

From an international cooperation perspective, the Shenzhen Bright Scientists Valley is positioned to become a globally recognized center for scientific and technological innovation, serving Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and beyond.
