This house is situated in a newly developed urban area of Phu Ly city, Ha Nam province. Due to the proximity to former cemeteries, there is a possibility of deep underground graves in this location. Therefore, the old soil layers must be excavated before construction to address these concerns.

From another perspective, this excavation allows the concept of incorporating the excavated site into the house design to come to life. Once the old soil layer is removed, the site becomes part of the house itself, creating unique features and opening opportunities to harness geothermal energy.

The house, named Tile Nest, conveys the idea of creating a spatial ‘nest’. It integrates multiple corners and crevices that extend down to the ground, with some ancient pit houses hidden underground. This combination gives the building a distinctive ripple-like appearance. The outer shell feels porous and perforated, while inside there is a large, open space.

The outer shell is made up of numerous suspended tiles that appear to be floating, reminiscent of the stacked roofs and sunshades found in traditional housing. The middle layer features green balconies at varying heights, offering charming views and helping to regulate the microclimate within the interior spaces.

Ceramic tiles have long been a familiar and beloved material among the Vietnamese people. In this house, however, they are applied in a unique way. The design encourages observation, touch, and sensory experience of the tiles’ qualities, creating varied yet intimate spatial patterns through sunlight reflection, airflow, and plant fragrances. This results in an immersive architectural experience deeply connected to nature, characterized by a memorable personality.
